RPG modernization and coding standards
Fixed-format RPG moved to free-format RPGLE with embedded SQL, plus standards the whole team can follow.
The client
Manufacturing and distribution companies on BPCS and Infor LX
The problem
Inventory and order-management programs had been written in fixed-format RPG III/IV over decades, making them slow to change and hard for newer developers to learn.
What we built
- Fixed-format RPG III/IV converted to free-format RPGLE with embedded SQL
- Reusable ILE service programs and updated error handling
- DDS files migrated to SQL DDL, tuned with Visual Explain
- RPGLE and CL coding standards, plus mentoring for junior developers
The outcome
Code that newer developers can read and change safely, built on SQL, with one set of standards across the team.
